The Northeastern men’s soccer team (2-3-1, 1-2 CAA) defeated the Monmouth University Hawks (2-3-1, 1-1-1 CAA) 2-1 to claim its first CAA victory Sept. 13.
In the 33rd minute, senior midfielder Morris Matthews played a lob pass into the Monmouth box. Junior midfielder Neil Devnani lept over his opponent to find Matthews’ cross and headed the ball into the back of the net to record his first collegiate goal and put the Huskies up 1-0.
Northeastern doubled its lead seven minutes later.
Matthews dribbled the ball to 10 yards outside of the box after collecting it in the center circle. He fired his shot into the upper left hand corner of the net to make the score 2-0.

With a commanding lead at halftime, the Huskies needed a strong defensive performance to seal the victory.
The teams exchanged blows through the opening 30 minutes of the second half with 11 fouls committed.
The Hawks got one back in the 75th minute with a goal by junior forward Andrea Croce, bringing the score to 2-1.
The Huskies held on with a save by graduate student goalkeeper Tobias Jahn to close the game.
Northeastern will look to continue its win streak against the Dartmouth Big Green (0-1-3, 0-0 Ivy League) on the road Sept. 17.
