Northeastern field hockey (4-3, 0-0 CAA) came home from its game in Orono, Maine, with an overtime 2-1 victory over the University of Maine Bears (3-4, 0-0 America East) Sept. 19.
Sophomore defender Camille Armaganian scored the Huskies’ first goal during a penalty corner, and senior midfielder and defender Anna-Kate Domingue scored the game-winning goal in an overtime shootout. Graduate student goalkeeper Arabella Loveridge blocked five shots.
The team was on a two-game losing streak prior to the faceoff in Maine, despite a strong 3-0 start to the season.
The first shots of the game were by Maine attacker Maeve Fogarty. Loveridge blocked the first one, and another shot less than 10 seconds later went wide. The Bears then earned a penalty corner but did not capitalize.
Junior forward Julia Puccio, junior midfielder, forward and captain Alex Mega and graduate student forward and midfielder Laine Ambrose all made unsuccessful shots on goal just before the end of the first period.
Mega made another shot on goal that was saved by Maine goalkeeper Rozarie Mrazova. Seven seconds later, Armaganian’s penalty shot put Northeastern’s first point on the scoreboard to go up 1-0.
But they wouldn’t remain in the lead for long. The Maine goalie blocked a shot by senior forward Emilia Adragna, and another shot by Mega went wide before Maine scored its first and final goal, a sweep from the left by senior midfielder Olivia Geniti.
Adragna and freshman midfielder Jessica Garden made blocked shots on goal with two minutes left in the quarter.
The start to the second half saw shots but none found the back of the net. In the same period, Loveridge blocked two back-to-back shots.
In another scoreless quarter, Maine failed a penalty corner, Loveridge made a save and Mega made a wide shot.
With the score 1-1, the teams entered a 10 minute, sudden victory overtime period with six field players and a goalie instead of the normal 10 field players and goalie. Northeastern earned and failed two penalty corners in the first two minutes.
The winning move was subbing out a defensive player for an attacker. Domingue stepped into this extra forward role, and after only 14 seconds on the field, she scored and ended the game. She stole the ball at the midline and ran down the right side of the field with it to within a few feet of the goal. The Maine goalkeeper slid to block Domingue, but the ball flew right past her.
Northeastern played national #5 Harvard University (6-0, 0-0 Ivy) at home Sept. 21 at 12 p.m.
