Northeastern men’s hockey (6-1, 3-0 HE) earned its second consecutive shutout, defeating the Stonehill College Skyhawks (1-9, 0-0 Northeast Conference) 2-0 Nov. 7.
The Huskies claimed their first goal courtesy of junior forward Tyler Fukakusa. Stonehill’s junior forward Joseph “J.J.” Grainda’s high sticking sent him to the sin bin with 14 minutes left in the first period. With over 90 seconds left on the power play, Fukakusa, a transfer from Rochester Institute of Technology, netted his first goal as a Husky.
Freshman forward Amine Hajibi passed the puck to freshman defenseman Dylan Compton for a one-timer into the scuffle at the crease. Freshman forward Jacob Mathieu stood in the center of the mess and tried to push it forward, but the puck went sideouts. Fukakusa tapped it in at the back post to put the Huskies up 1-0.
The Huskies have been successful on the power play this season, scoring two goals with the one-man advantage against Boston College Oct. 31.
Northeastern had four penalties from Compton, Fukakusa, sophomore forward Joe Connor and senior defenseman Joaquim Lemay. The Huskies have been playing rough this season, as the team had 14 penalties combined in the series against Boston College and 11 in the season opener against Holy Cross Oct. 4.
Senior defenseman and captain Vinny Borgesi scored the insurance goal in the third period with less than five minutes left. Junior forward Dylan Hryckowian skated along the left side of the ice before sending the puck across the ice to Borgesi, who collected it and shot into the upper left corner, making the score 2-0 for the Huskies. This was Borgesi’s second goal of the season.
At the end of the shutout, junior goaltender Lawton Zacher saved 36 shots, only four away from his season-high against BC.
Northeastern looks to complete the sweep of Stonehill Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. at Matthews Arena.
Correction: This article was updated at 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9 to correct that the Huskies play in the Hockey East conference. A previous version of this article incorrectly stated they played in the Coastal Athletic Association.
