The Northeastern women’s basketball team (6-10, 2-4 CAA) defeated the Hofstra University Pride (3-14, 1-5 CAA) 62-60 in a battle on Long Island Jan. 18. The Huskies now sit 10th out of 13 teams in CAA standings.
Sophomore forward Justice Tramble led the Huskies in scoring with 13 points. Sophomore guard Camryn Collins had four steals and made 10 points; sophomore guard Morgan Matthews had nine points, a block and a steal; and sophomore center Alyssa Staten had six rebounds and eight points.
The Huskies had their best shooting of the game in the first quarter with a 57% field goal percentage, compared to Hofstra’s 33%. Northeastern went up 4-0 in the first two minutes, outscoring the Pride 18-11. The Huskies also dominated in the paint, scoring 12 points to four, and were stronger grabbing rebounds, taking 11 to the Pride’s five, all in the first frame.
The second quarter was much closer between the teams, as Northeastern only outscored Hofstra 16-15 to lead the game 34-26. Once again, the Huskies outscored the Pride in the paint, this time eight to two. The Huskies were put in the bonus with just under two minutes left in the quarter, allowing them to score off three foul shots.
Out of halftime, the game flipped as the Huskies shot a weak 14% from the field, missed five 3-pointer attempts and did not go to the foul line once, while Hofstra shot a game-high 50% from the field. Layups by Tramble started and ended scoring for the Huskies in the quarter, with the only points the team scored, bringing the Huskies’ once eight-point lead heading into the quarter to a two-point deficit as the Pride outscored them 14-4.
In the fourth quarter, the Huskies were put into the bonus with under two minutes to go with a 53-52 lead. They went on a seven-point run, all off foul shots, to lead 60-52 with 27 seconds left. Things got closer as Hofstra hit a 3-pointer followed by two foul shots, but Tramble hit two more free throws to increase the lead to 62-57 with four seconds left. A buzzer beater for Hofstra ended the game with a 62-60 final score.
The lead changed five times in the final quarter, with 16 of Northeastern’s 24 points coming off foul shots as the team only missed one attempt.
Northeastern is back in action against the William & Mary Tribe (8-8, 1-4 CAA) at home Jan. 23 at 7 p.m. The Tribe currently sits right under Northeastern in CAA standings and earned their only CAA win so far against the North Carolina A&T Aggies, who the Huskies lost to 84-83 in double overtime.
