The Northeastern women’s basketball team (6-15, 2-9 CAA) fell to the Stony Brook Seawolves (13-10, 8-2 CAA) 64-55 Feb. 6 and the Towson Tigers (13-10, 6-5 CAA) 63-55 Feb. 8, extending the team’s losing streak to five games.
Against the Seawolves, the Huskies were outrebounded and completely fell apart in the second quarter, being outscored 17-6. They only made two shots from the field and gave up 12 points off turnovers.
Junior guard Yirsy Quéliz led the team in scoring with 13 points and notched five steals. Sophomore center Alyssa Staten led the team in rebounds with five, and sophomore guard Camryn Collins and sophomore forward Justice Tramble notched 12 and 10 points, respectively.
A jumper by Collins opened up scoring for the Huskies less than a minute in, but the Seawolves quickly took an 8-2 lead with seven minutes to go. The teams remained scoreless for over two minutes before a jumper by Staten broke it up. Stony Brook took 11 of the next 18 to end the first quarter up 19-11.
The second quarter started strong for Northeastern as the team took three of the first four points off a layup by Tramble and two foul shots by sophomore forward Taylor Holohan. But after over a minute of no scoring, the Seawolves hit a 3-pointer that Staten answered with a putback jumper with seven and a half minutes to go.
The rest of the quarter, Northeastern failed to score while Stony Brook took 13 straight points for a 36-17 lead.
The Huskies’ scoreless streak finally ended 17 seconds into the third quarter with Northeastern collecting five straight points. The teams were back and forth until, with four minutes left, the Huskies went on a nine-point run, all off plays in the paint.
With Stony Brook’s lead cut down to three, the Seawolves hit three straight foul shots to bring the gap to six points, but a fast break layup for Collins with three seconds left ended the quarter 47-43.
With the Huskies having erased the 19-point lead from the end of the first half, their seventh win of the season was in reach. Unfortunately, the Seawolves outscored them 17-12 to take the lead. Stony Brook sank three foul shots to begin the fourth quarter and brought its lead to 50-43. The teams exchanged baskets until the Seawolves scored five straight, and the Huskies were unable to come back, falling 64-55.
Coming off the loss, Northeastern needed to fight harder for boards and limit points off turnovers. Unfortunately, the team was unsuccessful in its Feb. 8 game against Towson, and a fourth quarter surge was not enough to get it back in the winning category.
Quéliz once again led the team in scoring, this time with 16 points, Tramble took 12 and Collins — standing at 5 feet 9 inches — led the team in rebounds with five. She also scored seven points.
The first quarter was sloppy and low scoring for both teams as Northeastern shot 25% from the field, and Towson shot even worse at 21%. Towson scored the first points off a second-chance layup and went out to a 6-0 lead before Northeastern began scoring over four and a half minutes into the game. Northeastern then went out on a 9-6 lead before the Tigers took the last two shots of the quarter to go ahead 11-9. Seven of Towson’s 11 points came off Northeastern turnovers.
In the second quarter, Northeastern took four straight points to take back the lead at 13-11. Towson tied it at 13 before Northeastern once again pulled ahead at 15-13, but the Tigers were quick to tie it again. They then scored seven straight points, five of which were off foul shots, to lead 22-15. The Tigers had an answer for every move the Huskies had the rest of the quarter and ended the first half up 29-20.
Out of halftime, the Tigers outscored Northeastern 19-14. Both teams had their best field goal percentages of the game in the third quarter, keeping things close and putting on a show for fans. Down by 14 by the end, the Huskies had to play strong to erase Towson’s lead.
With the Tigers leading 52-36 with less than eight minutes remaining, the Huskies took seven straight to cut the lead back to single digits at 52-43. The teams went back and forth until a 3-pointer by Quéliz and a free throw by sophomore guard Morgan Matthews cut the lead to seven with a minute and half to go. A free throw by Towson with 17 seconds left served as the last point of the game, handing the Tigers the lead 63-55 and Northeastern its fifth straight loss.
The Huskies will play the College of Charleston Cougars (19-3, 11-0 CAA), who are yet to lose a conference game, at home Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. In their last matchup, Northeastern lost 85-58.
