Lane Health Center is often overlooked by the Northeastern community. Though it may be tucked away on Forsyth Street and a little hard to find, it serves as the healing center for on-campus aches and pains. “People use it as a last minute source,” said Rebecca Langlais a freshman nursing major. Potential benefits of going to the Lane Health Center are not always recognized. “Most students already have basic first aid in their rooms,” said Olga Shokh, a freshman pharmacy major. Primary care providers are assigned to each patient personally and will serve as their main medical contact. The primary care providers are all nurse practitioners and physicians that are involved with all of the services that are available to the patients, according to the Lane Health Center’s Web site. But, some students have never gone to Lane for health care help, or anything else for that matter. “I honestly have to say that I have never been there,” said Greg Douillard, a sophomore civil engineering major. “It’s not clearly advertised what Lane does. I don’t know when to go.” Services provided range from sexual health care, allergy shots, on site X-rays, lab work and mental psychiatric consults. Emergency contraception as well as prescriptions for other contraception are available. Pregnancy tests and testing for sexually transmitted diseases are also available. Allergy shots can be arranged to be administered weekdays by appointment. Students must provide their own serums in containers labeled with their name, expiration date and content. Detailed instructions and dosage schedules are also mandatory for this service. Any lab work or X-rays that cannot be done on-site will be done at a medical facility close by. Additional testing will be billed to the patient’s insurance or to the patient personally even if sent off-site. The Lane Health Center is also equipped with mental health services and psychiatric clinicians. If any specialist services are necessary, a written referral can be issued by the patient’s personal primary care provider at Lane Health Center and the patient may be sent to New England Baptist Hospital or Beth Israel DeaconessMedical Center. All full-time students need to have insurance coverage of some form for any medical costs that may arise. For students withoutcoverage, Northeastern offers the Northeastern University Student Health Insurance Plan (NUSHIP). Undergraduate students can receive primary care at Lane Health Center at no additional charge. This stands whether the student is enrolled in NUSHIP or under a different insurance policy. Graduate students are eligible for care if they are covered by NUSHIP. If they do not have NUSHIP as their insurance plan, the students can pay an annual fee that will allow unlimited primary care at Lane. Students are automatically signed up for NUSHIP unless they waive coverage. To waive coverage, the student would need to show proof of comparable insurance coverage. The student will need to present the name and address of the insurer, the policy and subscriber numbers and any other terms and limitations that may be involved with the student’s coverage.
