Junior long jumper Andrew Staples took first place at the New England Championships with a jump of 24 feet, 2.5 inches Saturday. His victory was the first time Northeastern claimed the long jump title at the New England Championships since 2004. Staples’ efforts have earned him Huntington News Player of Week honors.

Your new Huntington News sports columnist here. You probably know me as one of the many voices on WRBB radio, but I’m not here to be an objective play-by-play man. Let’s make this clear up front: This is a newspaper column, and will be treated as such. With that disclaimer out of the way, let’s dive right into it.
Northeastern men’s basketball head coach Bill Coen inked a significant contract extension two weeks ago. You know the details by now: Signed through 2016, he and his assistants got raises, and the program got a boost in recruiting resources. But the news meant so much more than a simple extension or more money.
Men’s basketball head coach Bill Coen has found a permanent home in Boston, and it’s on Huntington Avenue. Athletics Director Peter Roby announced May 3 that Coen signed a six year contract extension which runs through the 2015-16 season. Exact terms of the contract were not disclosed.
With dominant pitching and an abundance of offense, the baseball team hauled itself out of a tumultuous slide this weekend, winning two out of three games against conference foe UNC–Wilmington. The Huskies improved to 2-10 in the Colonial Athletic Association and 9-19 on the season after losing 15 out of 16 games since March 20.
The home of the Huskies reached the century mark.
Matthews Arena, the world’s oldest multi-purpose athletic facility, turned 100 years old Friday.
Matthews currently serves as the primary home of the men’s and women’s hockey teams, as well as the men’s basketball team. The women’s basketball team also occasionally plays there, and many of the athletics staff’s main offices are located there as well.
The building, known as Boston Arena for its first 72 years of existence, opened its doors to the public April 16, 1910. Brochures passed out at the opening described the building as “the most complete home of sport in America – the largest, most complete and most elaborate temple erected for the devotees of sport in the world.”
“We are what we are and there’s no way of getting round that.”
Those frustrated words came from baseball head coach Neil McPhee after last night’s 9-3 loss to Boston College in the championship game of the Beanpot Tournament.
“We just have to figure out a way to get ourselves off the canvas right now,” he said.
At just 5 feet, 1 inch, Annie Hogan arrived at Northeastern in the fall of 2006 looking like anything but a hockey player.
The forward had left a stellar career behind her at Lawrence Academy in Groton, Mass., earning All-League selection in 2005-06 and team MVP in 2005. But making the transition to a Division 1 hockey program left Hogan with some bumps and bruises along the way.
“I was just so small,” she recalled. “I didn’t have any muscle. I just got out of high school and was doing the same toe-drags and fancy moves you can get away with. But [in college] you get knocked around a couple times, get your helmet knocked off get, a couple of sticks broken. You learn pretty fast what’s going to work and what isn’t at this level.”
Sophomore Teddy Vrountas of the men’s track & field team took first place in the 5,000 meter with a time of 15:02.76 at the Solomon Invitational hosted at Northeastern’s Solomon Track in Dedham Saturday. Even the rainy weather couldn’t stop Vrountas from crushing the field with the second closest runner finishing a distant 17 seconds behind him. His efforts earned him Huntington News Player of the Week honors.
Since 2006, I’ve taken lessons from a variety of sources, within and beyond the classroom walls at Northeastern. May 7, I will become an alumnus of that fine institution.
Fortunately, the combination of classical education and practical experience provided by our administration and faculty has prepared me to take advantage of my knowledge, so that I may contribute to a better society.

The Huskies snapped out of an 11-game losing streak last night with an 8-5 victory over UMass–Amherst in the first round of the Beanpot.
“We broke the streak today which was huge, but we struggled,” head coach Neil McPhee said after the victory. “Hopefully things will start going our way.”
The volleyball team is saying goodbye to two important seniors this year: Co-captains Leah Neubeck and Jessica Tkachuk both have used their four years of eligibility.
Neubeck, a libero and defensive specialist, still has one year left at Northeastern. She will be completing her degree in architecture. As of right now, she plans to take time off from competitive sports to focus on her studies. Neubeck said she hopes to follow a career path that involves the design side of architecture, since that is what most intrigues her.
