Students find warmth in Tinder-themed comedy show

Times New Roman President Ryan Martin begins his set by telling the audience he is seeing someone new: his therapist. He said he needed therapy following a relapse into being a “theatre kid,” after undergoing a long recovery.

Cesar Acosta shares stories about his platonic loves: his roommates. He called one a “dormant supervillain,” another a “golden retriever boy mascot” and the last a “grown-man-sized eight-year-old boy.”

Gabby Riberdy, Times News Roman treasurer, analyzes “Chip n Dale: Rescue Rangers,” an animated comedy and adventure movie she recently watched. She knew the show was Tinder-themed, but instead wanted to focus on the characters who play “washed up actors” and a “cartoon trafficking ring.”

Jared Rogoff spends his set analyzing the similarities between the world wars and his bathroom experiences after eating Subway. “They were both very bloody and painful and everyone left with PTSD,” Rogoff said.

Spread out around AfterHours, students from across campus gather for an evening of Tinder-themed comedy. There were a total of 13 comedians who performed sets.

Jacob Kline shares how he tries to make his Tinder bio overtly masculine, but his friends know that’s not him. Even that night, he said he’d dressed like “John Mulaney and Weird Al Yankovic had a bisexual child.”

Audience members enjoy Times New Roman’s first stand-up comedy show of the year. Times News Roman club members who have performed in at least one open mic are eligible to perform at stand-up comedy shows, while the open mic shows are open to everyone.

Sam Newman opens the show with some oh-so-loved audience interaction, in addition to his hosting duties for the evening. He presented several pictures of himself and asked the audience to sit down or remain standing — a physical “swipe” of left or right.
