Forget Team Edward and Team Jacob, the NBC late night talk show debacle has everyone joining Team Conan.
NBC’s late night line-up has been struggling, particularly The Jay Leno Show, which airs in the 10 p.m. slot. Meanwhile, Conan O’Brien has been doing a bit better on the Tonight Show, which has held the coveted 11:35 p.m. slot for almost 60 years. The network has stirred up plenty of attention now, though, with a proposal to move the Jay Leno Show to 11:35 p.m., bumping the Tonight Show to 12:05 a.m.
O’Brien released a statement Tuesday, just two days after NBC outlined its plan. Among other things, O’Brien wrote, ‘I sincerely believe that delaying the ‘Tonight Show’ into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. The ‘Tonight Show’ at 12:05 simply isn’t the ‘Tonight Show.”
He also expressed concern for Jimmy Fallon, who took over ‘Late Night’ when O’Brien left. Later in the letter, O’Brien said, ‘I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction. Some people will make the argument that with DVRs and the Internet a time slot doesn’t matter. But with the Tonight Show, I believe nothing could matter more.’
At first, there were social media inklings of people joining Team Jay, according to media sources. But media reports are now showing that the public attitude has turned overwhelmingly against NBC and quite clearly favors O’Brien. The hosts themselves are lashing out in their monologues, taking stabs at NBC rather than at each other. O’Brien even invited one of his writers on stage, who then called NBC ‘a big pimp.’
Leno had got his two cents in too. ‘Hey, NBC said they wanted drama at 10,’ he said. ‘Now they’ve got it.’
