Column: Good, bad and ugly vacations

February 21, 2013
With freezing temperatures, constant snowfall and the T breaking down every five minutes, it is safe to say that many Bostonians are dreaming of a getaway. I am no different. I have been planning a vacation to Jamaica for the past couple months and soon I will be sitting on a beach for a week without a care in the world – hopefully. Not all vacations go as planned, as I and many others have experienced.

Editorial: MBTA upgrades are long overdue

January 24, 2013
In the midst of Wednesday’s morning commute, on the coldest morning of the year thus far, the Green Line stopped running. A cable fire in the tunnel between the Copley and Arlington stations disabled service through the heart of downtown – between Kenmore Square and Government Center – as well as service on Huntington Avenue’s E-Line. Within the same time period, three Red Line trains died on the tracks, delaying service for countless more.

Column: T Time

January 24, 2013
This week, thanks to the Boston blog Universal Hub, I stumbled upon the MBTA Transit Police blog's Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section. It started last week with a post titled “Marijuana-FAQ.” Whoever writes this stuff should be given their own personal blog. Who knew the police could be funny (but it’s not THAT surprising, since they work on the T; you HAVE to have a sense of humor to do that). For example, in the “FAQ-Assaults, Body Odor, Alcohol…” post, a T rider asks why the police never responded when she complained of a person with sub-par hygiene sitting next to her on the train.

MBTA plans improvements to 39 bus route

June 21, 2012
The MBTA detailed plans earlier this month of how it will improve the Route 39 bus, a key connector of Mission Hill and the Northeastern campus and a staple of many students’ daily routines. The proposal is part of the authority’s broader Key Bus Route Improvement Program, and calls for reduced stops, added bus shelters and more reliable service, according to a slideshow posted on the MBTA’s website.

MBTA service cuts, fare increases approved

April 12, 2012
Activists are protesting service cuts and fare hikes after the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Board of Directors approved a 23 percent fare increase and a set of service reductions in a 4-1 vote on April 4 as a part of the MBTA’s third proposal to address its $185 million budget deficit for Fiscal Year 2013, released March 28. The changes will go into effect July 1.

Editorial: SGA semester off to slow start, more advocacy needed

February 16, 2012

Early this month, the Student Government Association (SGA) put little red arrows around campus, pointing at their accomplishments. Many, if not most, of these red arrows are pointing at changes made in years past like Outtakes and Rebecca’s Cafe, which makes sense – SGA hasn’t...

T debt a result of decades of inefficiencies

February 16, 2012

By Scott Ryder, News Correspondent  Ridership on the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has been at an all-time high since last year, but the authority recently proposed fare hikes and service cuts to balance its operating budget, which includes a $185...
