MBTA proposes to cut weekend E trains

The MBTA is facing a projected deficit of $185 million for Fiscal Year 2013 and has proposed two plans to address this deficit, according to a Jan. 3 press release. Both options would not only raise fares, but also eliminate Green Line E service on weekends. If implemented, this would be the T’s first fare hike in five years.

MBTA adds three-car trains to Green Line

As of Monday, the Green Line has been sporting nearly triple the number of three-car trains and has jumped from 13 to 32 trips per weekday on its B, D and E branches. This will be the first time in at least six years that Lechmere Station will house three-car trains and the first time ever that Huntington Avenue will see them on its tracks, according to a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) press release.

Student tickets for this year’s Beanpot Tournament will go on sale at Matthews Arena Saturday at 9 a.m. Depending on location in the TD Garden, tickets are either $32 or $42 and are valid for all four games of the tournament. Students can purchase one ticket with a valid Husky Card. Doors at Matthews Arena will open at 8 a.m. Northeastern will play Harvard in the first round of the tournament at 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 7 at the TD Garden.

MBTA, BPD crack down on subway vandals

In a recent push to eradicate graffiti on the T, Boston Police have cracked down on vandals on most T lines. Sentences for vandals have become more harsh than the usual slap on the wrist. They now include more severe punishments like jail time, probation and thousands of dollars worth of fines.

World Wide Bus and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) announced last week they will run a new express bus service between Cambridge, Newton and New York City. The company is offers an introductory one-way rate of $10 on weekdays and $15 on weekends until Nov. 18. The regular fare is $15 on weekdays and $20 on weekends. Service began Oct. 27.
