John Spiliotis has been spending his time driving around the Nahant beach area, occasionally walking up and down the beach’s sandy shore in search of something that he has not seen since April 30 — his son.
“I just want him to call and say ‘Daddy, don’t worry, I’m alright, I’ll come home when I feel like it,'” John Spiliotis said.
Konstantinos Spiliotis, a senior computer science major, was last seen by his father one day before he was supposed to graduate from Northeastern when he was dropped off at the Sullivan Square T station. He was supposed to be heading to the university to pick up his cap and gown.
The Medford native was reported missing on May 1 after his family was unable to locate their son during the commencement ceremony at the FleetCenter and confirmed with the university that he had not taken part in graduation, according to the Medford Police Department.
Early that morning, however, a Nahant police officer spotted the missing Northeastern student walking along the causeway, a road that links the towns of Nahant and Lynn. The officer asked the student for identification, ran a criminal background check and asked where the 22-year-old was headed. Spiliotis said he was going to a friend’s house, and the officer gave him a ride to the center of Nahant. After seeing a news report concerning the missing student on May 2, the officer notified Medford Police about his contact with Spiliotis.
“[Spiliotis] was fine, not under the influence [of alcohol] and said he was walking to a friend’s place. [At the time] he had not yet been reported to be missing,” Covino said.
Five days after Konstantinos was reported missing, the university released a statement concerning his disappearance. The statement said the university is “working closely with the Medford Police Department and the Spiliotis family” in the investigation. The statement also said the university “remains hopeful that Konstantinos will be located quickly and safely.”
John Spiliotis said he is searching places he and his wife would take their son in years past such as the beach in Nahant and an area park where his son was reported to have been seen on the morning of May 3.
“We are looking everywhere … so we can bring him home. He never called and said ‘Mom, Dad, I’m upset,'” Spiliotis’ father said.
Medford Police reported Konstantinos was last seen wearing a gray Nautica T-Shirt with a white shirt underneath. He also had on blue jeans and black boots. Officials are asking anybody with information regarding Spiliotis’ whereabouts to call the Medford Police at 781-395-1212.
