The Northeastern men’s baseball team (12-7, 0-0 CAA) was shut out by the Boston College Eagles (9-9, 2-4 Atlantic Coast) in a solo game March 19 by a score of 6-0. The Huskies four-game win streak came to an end with its first loss to Boston College since 2022.
The Eagles’ bats were hot immediately with a triple by the Eagles’ leadoff hitter in the first inning. Junior outfielder Josiah Ragsdale was then knocked in by a two-out RBI single up the middle, making the score 1-0.
Husky graduate student left-handed pitcher Max Gitlin started the day off and recorded five strikeouts in 3.2 innings, both season highs.
Boston College then quickly extended their lead to 6-0 after scoring three runs on three hits in the fourth inning. After this offensive success, freshman right-handed pitcher Andrew Basel came in. Basel threw for 1.1 innings, with two strikeouts and a walk, yet allowed two earned runs in the 5th with an RBI single and a sacrifice bunt.
The rest of the game was quiet for the Eagles as both junior right-handed pitcher Ryan Griffin and freshman right-handed pitcher Angel Cruz provided a combined three shutout innings. This was Cruz’s first career appearance and he struck out the first two batters he faced.
The Huskies had the opportunity to respond in the later innings, but were unable to execute offensively despite the pitching success. Northeastern has scored at least one run for their past 140 games, so the loss was the first shutout since May 19, 2022 against the University of Delaware.
The Huskies will play the Towson University Tigers (7-15, 0-0 CAA) at Friedman Diamond March 21, kicking off conference play.
