The Northeastern men’s soccer team (2-6-3, 1-4-1 CAA) tied the Monmouth University Hawks (5-4-3, 2-1-3 CAA) 1-1 Oct. 11. The Huskies took the teams’ first meeting 2-1 Sept. 13 in the team’s most recent victory.
The biggest change for Northeastern was senior midfielder Kade Tepe’s switch from left to right wing. This decision proved to be fruitful early on as the Huskies were playing quick, clean passes and dominating possession in the opening minutes of the game.
Graduate student goaltender Tobias Jahn was called upon twice in the first half, making two clean saves to keep his team out of danger. On the other side of the field, the Husky offense outshot the Hawks 7-5.
In the final 30 seconds of the first half, Northeastern broke the deadlock, going up 1-0. Freshman midfielder Will Schmidt found junior midfielder Neil Devnani with a pass on the left side of the field. Devnani crossed the ball into the box onto the head of freshman forward Asiah Carroll for his first collegiate goal.
The Huskies started the second half the same way as the first, connecting passes and getting quality scoring opportunities.
Through the first 25 minutes, the team took three shots and forced two saves out of freshman goalkeeper Herman Johnsen. Jahn stayed as solid as ever, making six saves in the half.
Monmouth claimed a shock goal of its own with 30 seconds left in the game. Senior forward Jakob Friedman dribbled the ball through the middle of the field before firing a shot from outside the 18-yard box into the top left corner of the goal.
Northeastern will take on the Boston University Terriers (8-3, 4-1 Patriot League) in a crosstown rivalry on the road Oct. 14 at 6 p.m.
