Column: The musical potential of 2014

January 15, 2014
Last year was arguably one of the best years for music in the last decade. Kanye declared himself a musical savior with “Yeezus,” Arcade Fire showed their fun-loving side with the long-awaited “Reflektor,” British electronic duo Disclosure broke onto the scene with their debut album “Settle,” and with “Random Access Memories,” Daft Punk reminded us that they are essentially musical robot gurus. All in all, a pretty stellar year. Now as we embark into 2014, the musical possibilities seem endless.

Column: A college relationship with a foreigner – A daunting but worthwhile endeavor

January 8, 2014
They may gawk at the two of you like a pair of zoo animals. Try to hold a solid stance and say it proudly. “Yes,” you counter, “we’ve been dating for over two years.” They chuckle like it’s an amusing idea to toy with for a couple of minutes. “Are you from the same town?” they press. “No, I’m from New Jersey and he’s from Hungary.” So not only did you baffle them with the contrarian notion of serious dating in college, but you also threw a curveball and added the multicultural facet. Relax, it can be done. It will take a heaping dose of patience, Internet access and the ability to decipher a Borat-like accent. But it will be the most fun and meaningful relationship your little 20-year-old life has ever seen.

What not to give this holiday season: a gifting guide

December 4, 2013
The holiday season: a merriment of lush greens, candles and tacky lights, chintzy paper snowflakes and, most fickle of all, gift-shopping. For many modestly-financed, brokering college students, the holiday season is not only a time of unusual things coming back into trend (hello, ugly Christmas sweaters and family board games) but a time to re-evaluate what it means to get someone a “good gift.” The average, poor college student living off of work study dollars has to reinvent that meaning to get someone a “not-sucky gift.” Here is your official guide.

Oops! She did it again: Britney Spears delivers

With a career spanning over 15 years, current reigning queen of pop is once again ruling the charts with her eighth studio album, “Britney Jean.” Released under RCA Records yesterday and posed to be Britney Spears’ ‘most personal album yet,’ “Britney Jean” is a perfectly diverse record, boasting co-written song credits to Spears herself. The album combines classic Britney ballads, electronic dance music (EDM) heavy club bangers and mid-tempo songs that, when incorporated together create another sure-hit for the worldwide pop superstar.

Social media users turn to anonymous apps

December 4, 2013
Most college students remember their first foray into social media as the one and only MySpace.

Spotlight Column: The artist formerly known as Kanye West

December 4, 2013
In my travels as a college student, I’ve noticed that inebriated 20-somethings can be fairly predictable when it comes to topics of conversation. Movies from the 90s (particularly Space Jam) and the rules of beer pong are crowd favorites, but no subject causes more controversy among millennials than Kanye West. Brought on by a Kanye track playing in the background or an off-hand Kardashian reference, the almighty Yeezus debate can divide rooms of friends quicker than Moses and the Red Sea.

Event Calendar: Dec. 5-11

December 4, 2013

Winners will receive prizes like ski trips, concert tickets and Johnny Cupcakes merchandise. Grab an ugly sweater, or buy one from Goodwill, and check out this night of festivities and holiday cheer.
