Diverse crowd fought for fun with fluffy weapons

A headrest, a sitting cushion, a weapon. The pillow is such a necessary item to everyday comfort, but is often overlooked and forgotten. Yet, Saturday, April 2, the pillow brought about 1,500 costumed people together in Cambridge Common for International Pillow Fight Day.

I am writing this guest column to you from a bunker right outside of Beirut, Lebanon. Grenades are constantly whizzing by my head as I make my way to class. Everywhere I turn women in burqas surround me, judging me for exposing my hair and illegally streaming “Teen Mom.” Oh, and there is a dusty, landmine-ridden desert all around me, as far as the eye can see. This is what I’ve come to expect as my daily routine in this God-forsaken country. Jeepers, this place really is just like Western media makes it look! In actuality, the only bunker I’ve been in here is one that has been turned into an after-hours dance club. Beirut couldn’t be any more Western if there were a McDonald’s right across the street from the main gate of my university – oh wait, there is.

Entry of the Week: This city will once again participate in World Pillow Fight Day on April 2. Last year, there were over 140 cities worldwide that took part in this pillow-fighting frenzie, and this year, multiple foreign cities such as Cape Town, Budapest, London, Paris and Zurich will join in on the fun. A crowd of more than 1,500 people are expected to be a part of this year’s event, waiting to hear the airhorn blow to sound-off the start. There are a few rules for the pillow fight: Use a soft pillow, don’t hit anyone with a camera or without a pillow and don’t use feathered pillows. NU professor featured at Kingston Gallery

Sophia Ainslie is usually the one giving instruction while she teaches her art classes. But on Monday, gallery curator James Hull directed Ainslie instead, while her students set up her art exhibit. Ainslie, a professor in the Department of Art + Design at Northeastern, will be featured at the Kingston Gallery in an exhibit called “Inside Out,” for the month of April.

NU Bands Spotlight: Jet Black Sunrise

Just a few weeks ago, rock indie/pop band Jet Black Sunrise played in WRBB’s Battle of the Bands, where they performed original songs such as “Falling” and “Fire Escape.” While on stage, they danced and goofed around, even performing Cee Lo Green’s “[Expletive] you,” where they traded instruments and rocked out.

When I first moved to Boston from the West Coast three years ago, I didn’t get the impression that it was a particularly artistic city. Of course there are fine institutions like Symphony Hall, the Museum of Fine Arts, and quite a few ornate theatres, but traditionally Boston has been defined more by the overwhelming presence of medical, financial, research and academic establishments.
