The Northeastern men’s soccer team (4-7-4, 2-5-1 CAA) fell 3-0 to the Stony Brook University Seawolves (8-4-5, 4-3-1 CAA) in its final game of the season Nov. 1 with a trip to the CAA tournament on the line.
The Huskies started off strong in the opening half of the match, firing off three shots. The defense held strong as well, only allowing the Seawolves one shot that was saved by graduate student goalkeeper Tobias Jahn.
Fouls continued to be a struggle, with the Huskies committing 12 in the first half alone.
With the start of the second half underway, Stony Brook quickly shifted momentum in its direction. Through the first eight minutes of play, the Seawolves took four shots, forcing two more saves from Jahn.
The Seawolves broke through in the 54th minute and went up 1-0. Senior forward Caleb Danquah crossed a corner into the box that was met by graduate student defender Jamie Orson, who headed the ball into the back of the net.
In the 64th minute, sophomore defender Ethan Leary took a player down in the box and received his second red card of the season. With Northeastern a player down, Jahn stepped up big for his team and saved the penalty kick to stay in the game.
Stony Brook doubled its lead 15 minutes later. Junior midfielder Justin Jean-Louis sent a lob pass over the heads of Husky defenders to junior midfielder Alex Fleury. Fleury took a touch in the box before slotting the ball into the bottom right corner of the net.
The Seawolves recorded a third goal in the 86th minute, officially ending the Huskies’ playoff hopes. Freshman forward Brayden Walker broke away from defenders, forcing Jahn to exit the net and shut down his shooting angle. Walker got a pass off to freshman midfielder Kristoffer Aarflot, who easily put the ball into the back of the empty net.
Northeastern ended the season with a 4-7-4 overall record, placing fifth in the CAA North Division.
