The Northeastern men’s soccer team (2-5-2, 1-3 CAA) fell to the Stony Brook University Seawolves (4-3-3, 1-2-1 CAA) 2-0 Sept. 27.
In the opening 12 minutes of the first half, the Huskies were on their heels early, conceding three corner kicks.
This defensive scramble came to a head in the 12th minute when the Seawolves opened up scoring. Senior forward Caleb Danquah dribbled the ball through the center of the field before sending a pass to senior midfielder Bruno Penney on the right side of the field. Penney crossed the ball into the box, finding senior midfielder Jackson Gould, who slotted a header into the left side of the goal to put the Seawolves up 1-0.
For the duration of the first half, the Huskies’ offense struggled to connect passes and managed just two shots. Things went from bad to worse in the 44th minute, when sophomore defender Ethan Leary received a red card for dragging a player down on a breakaway. The red card to Leary would ultimately become an obstacle the team was unable to overcome.
Northeastern finished the first 45 minutes a man and a goal down.
The Huskies’ play seemed to be improving in the second half, with the offense firing off four shots in the first 10 minutes and forcing Stony Brook’s freshman goalkeeper Heidar Hermannsson to make his first save of the game. Senior defender Rohin Kapila claimed his team’s best scoring chance in the 53rd minute with a header that narrowly missed the right side of the goal.
Northeastern continued a season theme of foul trouble and committed five fouls, including a yellow card issued to Kapila in the second half, putting the Huskies in danger of conceding and squashing offensive momentum.
In the 64th minute, Stony Brook doubled its lead. Junior midfielder Alex Fleury played a lob pass from his own defense zone to junior forward Finlay Oliver, who received it outside of the 18-yard box. Oliver chipped the ball over the head of senior defender Matty Gardner before navigating between two Husky defenders and firing the ball into the left side of the net to increase the Seawolves’ lead to 2-0.
Although late substitutes for the Huskies forced three more saves out of Hermannsson, no attempts were successful.
The game resulted in a 2-0 conference loss for Northeastern. The team will look to bounce back against the Hofstra University Pride (6-4, 3-1 CAA) Oct. 4 on the road in a rematch from a 3-1 loss .
