The Northeastern men’s soccer team (4-6-4, 2-4-1 CAA) tied the University at Albany Great Danes (4-5-4, 2-1-1 America East) 1-1 in the final home game of the season Oct. 21.
The Huskies seem to have figured out the foul trouble that plagued them game after game this season; in this game, the team committed just three in the first half, all of which came in the opening 17 minutes. The offense generated quality scoring chances and got off four shots that forced two saves from freshman goalkeeper Alexander Genz.
Despite its offensive dominance, Northeastern could not seem to find the back of the net — until the 42nd minute.
Senior defender Jaden Prado dribbled the ball down the left side of the field before beating his defender and sending a cross into the box. Waiting on the penalty spot was freshman forward Shai Saarony, who easily slotted the ball into the bottom right corner to put his team up 1-0. This marked Saarony’s first collegiate goal and Prado’s fifth assist of the season.
On the other end of the field, graduate student goaltender Tobias Jahn continued his stellar performance this season, making three saves in the first half.
Northeastern found itself in foul trouble once again in the second half; the team committed seven fouls and two yellow cards were issued to senior defender Matty Gardner and junior midfielder Neil Devnani. The Huskies continued to find scoring chances, taking five shots that required two more saves by Genz.
In the 81st minute, Gardner fouled a Great Dane just outside his own box, giving Albany a free kick. Graduate student forward Isaac Filippo stepped up to take the kick and put a perfect cross into the box for sophomore midfielder Breckin Fett to volley into the back of the net, leveling the game at 1-1.
The final whistle blew to mark yet another game that got away from the Huskies.
Northeastern will play its final game of the season against the Stony Brook University Seawolves (5-4-5, 2-3-1 CAA) on the road Nov. 1, looking to avenge a 2-0 loss to the team Sept. 27.
