Prosecutors identified the suspect fatally shot by police during an altercation on Hemenway Street April 4 as 29-year-old Jacob Graves, according to reporting by The Boston Globe.

Boston police were responding to a mental health distress call made by Graves, who attacked multiple officers and EMS clinicians with a weapon, according to Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox. At a press conference following the incident, Cox referred to the weapon as a sword, but officials have since described it as “sword-like.” Graves was subsequently Tased and shot by officers and later died as a result of his injuries.

According to reporting by The Boston Globe, Graves was a former student at Berklee College of Music but did not graduate.

The incident was the latest in a string of violent crimes on and around Northeastern’s campus, including the stabbing of a student outside of Marino Recreation Center March 27, a stabbing near East Village the morning of April 1 and reports of shots fired on Gainsborough Street that evening.

Berklee students received an emergency public safety alert from the college within an hour following the April 1 incident. The alert included details about the possible gunshots and police response, along with Berklee’s plan to increase patrols in the area. Northeastern students received no alerts. 

The only notification regarding the April 4 incident was sent to Northeastern students by email just before noon and said there was “no active threat” to campus.

Dozens of students gathered outside Marino April 6 to voice dissatisfaction with Northeastern’s response to the incidents.
