Northeastern men’s basketball named rising senior guard Mike Loughnane team captain May 13, taking over the role from rising senior LA Pratt, who left the program after entering the transfer portal.
“Mike has been a proven leader for our program from the moment he stepped on campus,” said head coach Bill Coen in the May 13 statement. “We look to him to lead by example, and we are confident that he will continue to be a positive influence on both our returning and incoming players in the year ahead.”
The Quincy, Mass., native will enter his second year as a Husky following a disappointing season and a tumultuous offseason, during which six players officially departed from the team to enter the portal. Loughnane is stepping into the role of captain after several seasons of low performance.
Before arriving at Northeastern, Loughnane spent two seasons at Davidson College. During his freshman year, he played a small role, appearing in 11 games and averaging 1.3 points per game. However, those numbers tripled during his sophomore season, as he appeared in 33 games and averaged 5.1 points per game, proving himself a valuable contributor for a program known for producing NBA star Steph Curry.
During the summer after his sophomore year, Loughnane decided to transfer to Northeastern, taking on the responsibility of both a scorer and a facilitator.
He made the most of his opportunity under Coen, averaging 31 minutes per game and scoring 10.2 points per game — an increase of 8.9 points from his first season at Davidson.
As Loughnane enters his final season and first as a captain, he will look to help revitalize a Northeastern program aiming to return to contention in the CAA.
