Column: SGA Facebook page a good way to reach students

November 10, 2010
I commend the Student Government Association (SGA), President Ryan Fox and other members of the organization for recently creating a Facebook page devoted to recognizing students’ ideas for ways to improve life as Huskies. With the page’s motto, “It’s your money, tell us how you want to see it spent on and around campus,” SGA members have initiated a more direct way to communicate with students and to ease the average Husky’s questions and concerns.

Letter: Some processes at Snell better off sans technology

November 10, 2010
Many new technologies have rolled out in recent weeks at the behest of Student Government Association (SGA). The new print system, while at first confusing, actually seems to be streamlining the print process (although I don’t like my pages being associated with a monetary value).

Letter: Students should not have to worry about attendance

November 10, 2010
As a Northeastern student who pays thousands of dollars to go to this university, my biggest pet peeve is the attendance policy. It’s ridiculous to me that 10 percent of my grade is riding on my presence in the classroom. Not whether I’m contributing to class, not whether I’m paying attention or just surfing the web, not if the teacher even knows my name. No, I’m being graded for just getting to class and sitting there, nothing more.

Column: Students should be considered in health care fight

November 4, 2010
The debate over health care this past year has boiled down to one question: Is health care in the United States a fundamental right or is it a privilege? I like to think that the basic necessities (health, education, jobs and housing) are all fundamental rights. Health care should be a priority for government to provide to its citizens – not just accessible to those who can afford it. The ongoing struggle of uninsured Americans continues to widen the gap between the rich and poor, and the age group mostly affected by this is 18-29-year-olds, according to Rock the Vote, a political group that encourages young people to participate in elections.

Editorial: Career Services has a lot to offer

November 4, 2010
As the academic year flies by, the initial thrill and anticipation of graduating may be replaced by fear and dread for many seniors. Given the state of the economy over the past few years, it’s not hard to see why. But things seem to be improving: While the national unemployment rate hovers around 9.6 percent, the 2011 Job Outlook Survey by the NACE shows that 13.5 percent more graduates from the class of 2011 will be hired than from the class of 2010.

Students should go to the polls Tuesday

October 26, 2010
It’s hard to avoid the fact that Election Day is fast approaching. The latest political scandals are splattered on the front pages of newspapers everywhere and it seems like political ads take up more time than the TV shows you’re watching do. But how much are these tactics affecting Northeastern students? Are you actually going to vote on Tuesday? If you’re scoffing at that question, you should reconsider.

Political ads attacking opponents are too much

October 26, 2010
It is anything but fun when commercials continually pound my brain with the best cleaning product to relieve pet odors, the most sturdy paper towel brand (that can beat any test, really) or the healthiest cereal that can lower anyone’s cholesterol.

No solution for off campus housing problems

October 26, 2010
Since I’ve been back on campus this semester, I’ve heard and read a lot about the off-campus housing situation here at Northeastern. It seems like every time I pick up this paper there’s another article about students being bad neighbors on Mission Hill or the pros and cons of living on campus as opposed to off. These issues pop up every fall and we, once again, are wasting our energy trying to ameliorate the problems.

Barriers keep students from traveling abroad

October 21, 2010
Last week, the Northeastern Office of Study Abroad Programs posted details on the Dialogue of Civilizations Web site for the upcoming summer semesters. Dialogues are just one of the many study abroad opportunities offered here, making the possibilities of intertwining co-op, classes and study abroad nearly endless.

Alcohol and drug policy not realistic in college

October 21, 2010
During freshmen and transfer orientations, students have to listen to a speech from staff members in the Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution (OSCCR). They discuss the procedures and guidelines for alcohol and drug abuse on campus and what to do if these abuses occur. While it is in fact an important speech, students are left with redundant information about how dangerous drugs can be.
