Inside column: Evolution of modern dance

March 14, 2013
I had never even thought about grinding before I came to America and was horrified, yet slightly intrigued, by the thought of it. The thought of a boy picking me to “grind” with was an ego boost (I say this with my head held in my hands because I truly am embarrassed about my former lack of self-esteem). At first, I didn’t understand what I had to do; I stood there in the middle of the dance floor like a dorky middle schooler at a dance, unaware of how to trap these boys. Sunday, March 17 Boston is known for its annual St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, from all-day parties to bar crawls to 10k runs. This year, The Westin Hotel, Samuel Adams, Gillette and other sponsors are working together with the Allied War Veterans Council (AWVC) for the South Boston St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Featuring school bands, beauty queens, Sesame Street, dancers, Boston companies, the characters from Star Wars and Wizard of Oz, Elvis, Captain Jack and the Boston Bruins mascot, it’s no wonder South Boston’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade is known as the second largest St. Patrick’s Day parade in the country. But unlike some St. Paddy’s Day parades and events, this one is designed as an event for veterans and those on active duty, to make their St. Patrick’s Day as best as it can possibly be with the help of anywhere from 600,000 to a million people who show up for the event every year.

Continuing with their comedic route, Marlon and Shawn Wayans visited Northeastern University on Monday night to a full audience at Blackman Auditorium, hosted by Kappa Sigma fraternity.

Inside column: Passion fruit

I have a friend. He’s got a name but suffice it to say he’s a he and he’s obsessed with movies. He’s quiet, but can reel off actors, awards, directors, dates, producers, trivia and lines from almost any feature film. I use him as a sort of walking IMDb – “What’s that movie with the black guy who’s a comedian but serious and he wears glasses–”
