After all the trouble Boston University has given the mens hockey team over the past few seasons, the Huskies will step into Agganis Arena Friday night one game away from ending the Terrier’s season.
Northeastern took 10 penalties but held No. 13 BU to 1-9 on the power play as the Huskies skated to a 4-2 victory in the first leg of the Hockey East quarterfinals Thursday night.
After splitting final Hockey East regular season series with Boston University, the men’s hockey team will head back down Commonwealth Avenue to Agganis Arena tonight to start a best-of-three playoff series against the Terriers.
The final buzzer sounded and Delaware escaped with a 60-58 victory to advance to the CAA Tournament quarterfinals. The loss ends Northeastern’s season at 11-20 overall.
Despite a record-setting tournament performance from junior goaltender Florence Schelling, the women’s hockey team couldn’t cash in on its first ever trip to the the Hockey East Championship last weekend and lost 3-1 to No. 7 Boston College at Walter Brown Arena.
Senior Andrew Staples made Northeastern history by leaping 23 feet, 7.5 inches in the long jump to become the first Husky to win the long jump event at the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America (IC4A) Championship.
His teammate, freshman Kaylin Miranda, finished 18th in the same event with a distance of 22 feet, 0.25 inches. The men’s team earned 10 points from this event, which contributed to their 24th place finish out of 52 teams.
As the men’s hockey team enters a big series against Boston University this weekend in the Hockey East quarterfinals, head coach Greg Cronin can only hope to achieve the amount of success the other varsity hockey team at Northeastern had last weekend.
Freshman forward/center Ryan Pierson was named to the all-conference men’s basketball rookie team last Thursday. He is Northeastern’s first all-rookie selection since senior Chaisson Allen four years ago. Pierson’s performance this past season has earned him Huntington News Player of the Week honors.
Tuesday afternoon athletic director Peter Roby and the Northeastern athletic department announced the end of the suspensions to men’s hockey head coach Greg Cronin and assistant Albie O’Connell.
The suspensions, which were indefinite as of February 18, were resulting from a NCAA recruiting violation that the program committed which was related to excessive telephone and text messaging with prospective student-athletes.
Since falling to the Sox 13-2, which didn’t count the Huskies are 0-6 on the season. In those six games, the squad has been outscored 62-to-21. The most recent loss came last night, when the team was no-hit and fell to Florida International 4-0.
Fresh from taking down the top team in the country last week, the Northeastern men’s hockey team couldn’t continue its winning ways against another tough opponent – New Hampshire. The teams skated to a 2-2 tie on Friday night in Durham and the Wildcats prevailed on Saturday night at Matthews Arena by a score of 6-3.
This season, the Huskies placed eighth out of nine — the exact same finish they posted in the previous season. On paper, one could simply chalk up the 2010-11 season as a lost opportunity, or at the very least, as a season that didn’t turn out for the best.
