The men’s basketball team’s matchup against Old Dominion University (ODU) Wednesday made for a record-setting night. Unfortunately for the Huskies, none of the records were worth bragging about.
CANCUN, Mexico – As 19th-century philosopher Henry David Thoreau once said, “Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves.”
The men’s basketball team’s experience at the Cancun Governor’s Cup in Cancun, Mexico, Dec. 22 to 24 is a prime example of Thoreau’s words coming to life.
Sophomore guard Joel Smith recorded 38 points in the last three games of the basketball season including eight three-pointers, five of which were made in the Huskies’ 56-54 loss to Utah State. Smith also made three steals during the Providence game. His performance has earned him Huntington News Player of the Week status.
Members of the men’s basketball team went to the free throw line 33 times in last night’s contest against the University of Rhode Island (URI). Unfortunately, the Huskies were not in the mood for freebies, as they missed 15 shots from the charity stripe, dropping a 79-67 decision in front of 1,708 spectators at Matthews Arena.
Two sophomores, forward Rachael Pecota and guard Afreyea Tolbert, scored 12 points to lead the women’s basketball team to their second straight win, defeating the University of Vermont 55-46 on the road last night.
Despite junior goaltender Florence Schelling’s14 saves in the third period, the No. 10 Northeastern Huskies were blanked 3-0 by the No. 4 Boston University Terriers at Walter Brown Arena Tuesday night.
And so the story continues.
For a team that’s gone 1-5 in one-goal games this season, blowing a two-goal lead and losing 5-4 in the final minutes against No. 7 Boston University last night seemed like a fitting way to end the first half of the season.
Since Greg Cronin took the helm of the Northeastern men's hockey program in 2005, his squads have mustered just two wins over Boston University in 22 tries. The reasons are all explicable. The trophy cases and championship banners speak to BU’s potential recruits. So it's no wonder that we've developed an inferiority complex over the years.
The women’s hockey team defeated the University of New Hampshire Wildcats 4-0 on the road last night, extending its winning streak to three games. After scoreless first and second periods on both ends, Northeastern turned it on and scored all four of their points in the last period of the game.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – As each shot ripped through the net, the Huskies’ bench repeatedly exploded with joy. The men’s basketball team was off to a hot start shooting, as the Huskies took an 11-point lead over Providence College (PC) early in the first half of action last night at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Providence, R.I. The Huskies, who shot 89 percent from the floor in the first four minutes of the game, seemed poised to upset the Friars and end their two-game losing skid.
