Housing puts focus on LLCs

Despite a raft of changes that has boosted the number of Living and Learning Communities (LLC) and expanded gender-neutral housing, housing officials expect room assignments for incoming freshmen and returning students to go smoothly. Northeastern President Joseph Aoun is leading a coalition favoring the extension of low-interest Perkins education loans. Aoun heads a group of 32 university presidents, including Tufts University President Lawrence Bacow and Boston University President Robert Brown, in signing a letter sent to US Department of Education Secretary Arnie Duncan Feb. 9, to keep the Perkins federal loans for students beyond the current 2014 expiration date.

Changes planned for Cabot

Editorial: On-campus groups have a responsibility to students

Resident Student Association (RSA), Student Government Association (SGA) and Council for University Programs (CUP) are groups that exist solely to serve students. RSA and SGA operate as the link between “students and the administration” according to their respective websites. CUP’s website boasts, “We are run for students, by students.” Officers of these groups need to understand their responsibility to students 0and to fulfill these responsibilities efficiently.

Senate scraps free periods

Northeastern’s Faculty Senate members voted Wednesday in favor of cutting activities periods by a vote of 30-2, with one abstention. The resolution details a plan to replace free periods Wednesdays and Thursdays with a new course sequence. This change will support an additional 226 class sections. It must now be approved by the provost and the president before implementation.

NU hits record for applicants

Northeastern received nearly 43,000 applications from prospective freshmen for the fall term, more than any private university in the country and breaking its own record for applications received.

Laptop lock pilot approved

Laptop combination locks for students working in Snell Library to lock their laptops will be available as early as this month, a move that could slash the number of computer thefts at Northeastern. The university’s Student Government Association (SGA) is working in conjunction with library officials to start a pilot program to offer the theft-deterrent devices for rental at the front desk of Snell. The devices for the pilot program were purchased with funds from the Provost’s office. “It’s already proven students want this,” SGA Vice President for Academic Affairs Michael Sabo said. “Other schools offer something like this already.”

In an article last week, The News reported on a proposed plan that will create 226 new sections for classes by eliminating activities periods Wednesdays and Thursdays. This is ultimately meant to benefit students and the entire Northeastern community. Simply put, there are not enough classrooms available to meet student demand for classes and sections.

The approximately 30 students in attendance brought up a wide variety of issues, mainly focused on the proposal’s effects on student groups on campus. Many students argued that losing a designated free time would be harmful to students who are involved with clubs.
