Laptop lock pilot approved

January 13, 2011
Laptop combination locks for students working in Snell Library to lock their laptops will be available as early as this month, a move that could slash the number of computer thefts at Northeastern. The university’s Student Government Association (SGA) is working in conjunction with library officials to start a pilot program to offer the theft-deterrent devices for rental at the front desk of Snell. The devices for the pilot program were purchased with funds from the Provost’s office. “It’s already proven students want this,” SGA Vice President for Academic Affairs Michael Sabo said. “Other schools offer something like this already.”

SGA backs axing activities periods

January 13, 2011
The Student Government Association (SGA) passed a resolution Dec. 13 supporting the university administration’s proposal to eliminate activities periods starting Fall 2011, a move intended to create 226 new sections for classes.

Editorial: Eliminating activities periods will ultimately benefit students

December 9, 2010
In an article last week, The News reported on a proposed plan that will create 226 new sections for classes by eliminating activities periods Wednesdays and Thursdays. This is ultimately meant to benefit students and the entire Northeastern community. Simply put, there are not enough classrooms available to meet student demand for classes and sections.

Schedule could change

December 9, 2010
News Staff photo/Laura PondThe Student Government Association (SGA) and three Northeastern administrators heard student concerns Monday night regarding the proposed elimination of activities period. The approximately 30 students in attendance brought up a wide variety of issues, mainly focused on the proposal’s effects on student groups on campus. Many students argued that losing a designated free time would be harmful to students who are involved with clubs.

SGA dismisses election changes

December 9, 2010
Student leaders had extensive, and occasionally heated, discussions Monday night as senators and other Student Government Association (SGA) members shot down proposals to change the way executive board members are elected.

Editorial: As a democracy, SGA must be more transparent for students

December 2, 2010
The News reported on Sept. 23 on the decision made by the Student Government Association (SGA) to no longer allow reporters from The News into Finance Board meetings. (Finance Board was previously known as the Budget Review Committee, or BRC). Board members justified this decision by saying that they deal with sensitive material in meetings, and all the numbers would be posted online after meetings for the entire student body to see.

SGA fails to post documents

December 2, 2010
The Student Government Association (SGA) website says a summary of its Student Activity Fee (SAF) allocation will be posted once per month at minimum. But the last update was put on the site Sept. 26.

December 2, 2010
The Student Government Association (SGA) announced yesterday that the Offices of the Registrar and Provost have proposed a plan that will create 226 new sections for classes. The plan involves eliminating of activities period on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Aoun promotes international work

November 18, 2010
President Joseph Aoun made an appearance in front of the Student Government Association (SGA) on Monday evening to talk about international co-op. Specifically, he said students aren’t doing enough of it.

Push for gender-neutral

November 11, 2010
In the two years Northeastern’s Gender Neutral Housing Living Learning Community (LLC) has existed, every bed has been filled. Resident Student Association (RSA) and Student Government Association (SGA) executives say student interest in the LLC is still growing, but there’s only one problem: The only rooms currently offered are in International Village (INV).

Column: SGA Facebook page a good way to reach students

November 10, 2010
I commend the Student Government Association (SGA), President Ryan Fox and other members of the organization for recently creating a Facebook page devoted to recognizing students’ ideas for ways to improve life as Huskies. With the page’s motto, “It’s your money, tell us how you want to see it spent on and around campus,” SGA members have initiated a more direct way to communicate with students and to ease the average Husky’s questions and concerns.

Letter: Some processes at Snell better off sans technology

November 10, 2010
Many new technologies have rolled out in recent weeks at the behest of Student Government Association (SGA). The new print system, while at first confusing, actually seems to be streamlining the print process (although I don’t like my pages being associated with a monetary value).
