It’s fashion week in Boston and the Boston En Vogue 2014 charity is hosting its Modern Elegance show at Bijou nightclub this Tuesday. The evening includes live entertainment and an industry-networking hour with representatives from every facet of the fashion industry, including modeling agencies and fashion magazines. Listen to live entertainment and enjoy appetizers before the show, which will showcase the new collections of some of the nation’s top designers. Not only will the show benefit fashion-savvy Bostonians, but it also donates a portion of the proceeds to local non-profit organization Extended Arms Youth Services. Thursday, Oct. 2
Taste test Massachusetts’s finest craft IPAs in the “Battle of the IPAs” contest hosted by Hopsters Brewery. Local brews including Hopsters “Imperialist,” Wormtown “Be Hoppy,” Slumbrew “Flagraiser,” Cisco “Indie Pale Ale,” Pretty Things “Meadowlark,” Night Shift “Jefferson,” Newburyport “Greenhead IPA” and Clown Shoes “Galactica” will go head to head on the taps at Hopsters. Try them all and vote for your favorite. The contest ends Oct. 7 and individuals can vote once per day. Hopsters will post the rankings as the competition progresses on their Facebook page, and the winning IPA will be on tap at Hopsters for the rest of the year. Feel like you’ve been transported to 19th century Fleet Street by taking in Stephen Sondheim’s Tony-Award winning macabre musical thriller “Sweeney Todd” at The Lyric Theatre this Friday. Set in the back alleys of London, the musical tells the story of disgraced barber Sweeney Todd, whose quest for revenge leads him to bake his enemies into pies with the help of Mrs. Lovett, owner of a failing pie shop.The musical is known for its witty dialogue and a hauntingly beautiful score. Saturday, Oct. 4
Have a comically good time at the Massachusetts Independent Comics Expo, coming to Lesley University this weekend. The expo is for New-England based comics, writers and enthusiasts, and focuses on the craft and community of making comics over the commercial memorabilia. Three exhibitions rooms offer fans a wide variety of subject matter including history, politics, science, food, literary classics, memoirs, humor and superheroes. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet classic graphic novelists and discover new ones. Over the two days there will be a variety of panels on topics central to independent comics, as well as character drawing workshops. Stock up on vinyl for your collection and check out local artists this weekend at the fourth annual JP Rocks and Rolls record and art fair, held at and hosted by the local community arts center Spontaneous Celebrations. The fair will occupy two floors with vendors selling everything from arts and crafts to clothes and jewelry, and, of course, records. There will also be tarot readings, caricature drawing and face painting. Monday, Oct. 6
Feel the crisp fall breeze in your hair and breathe in the salty ocean air on a cruise down the Charles River. It’s a perfect way to be a tourist in your own town, or for those new to Boston to see the city from a different angle. Choose from a 60- or 90-minute journey, and take in the sights of the city, while learning more about the history of the area from a tour guide. For those looking to spice up their workout routine, try running the stairs at Harvard Stadium as part of the November Project, a free fitness program started in Boston that aims to give people a way to work out in the cold winter months without having to join a gym. The November Project is free for life for everyone. Harvard Stadium is one of the most popular workout spots of the program. Attendees can choose between four different workouts with varying levels of intensity and with a focus on either speed or endurance.
