Northeastern women’s hockey (17-6, 13-1 HE) returned to the ice with a 2-1 victory against the University of New Hampshire Wildcats (11-10-3, 5-7-2 HE) Jan. 17. It was the Huskies’ first game after being knocked out of the Beanpot Championship by Boston University Jan. 13.
Freshman goaltender Renna Trembecky was in net for her sixth start of the year. So far, she has averaged a .925 save percentage and 1.82 in goals against, a solid start for Northeastern’s No. 2. Trembecky was also in the net when Northeastern lost in overtime 4-3 to the Wildcats Dec. 2 but sought redemption Jan. 13 after saving 18 shots. UNH remains the Huskies’ one strike in its otherwise perfect Hockey East record.
Immediately following an icing call on the Wildcats, with just 20 seconds left in the first period, captain and senior forward Lily Shannon passed to freshman forward Stryker Zablocki by the crease, whose shot was saved by junior goaltender Noemi Martinez. Sophomore forward Éloïse Caron collected the rebound and took a sharp shot from the left of the net for a 1-0 game.
At the end of the period, Northeastern was up in shots on goal by 12 to nine, despite taking three penalties to the Wildcats’ one.
During New Hampshire’s fifth power play of the night, senior forward Alyson Hush took control of the puck to the side of the net before wrapping it around to tie the game with six minutes remaining in the second period.
A minute later, graduate student forward Jaden Bogden passed to Caron, who recorded her first shorthanded goal of her career, giving the Huskies the lead once again. Caron lit the lamp twice for the Huskies, giving her a total of 10 goals and 15 points this season.
The third period finished off with six shots on goal by the Huskies to the Wildcats’ four. Senior defender Jules Constantinople was up and down the ice, tallying five blocks in the 60 minutes. Northeastern’s penalty kill remained locked down, given it took a season high-seven penalties between seven players throughout the match.
Northeastern will play the Boston College Eagles (10-12-1, 8-5-1 HE) in the Beanpot consolation game Jan. 20 4:30 p.m. at TD Garden.
