Northeastern men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the CAA Indoor Championship at the Track at New Balance Feb. 22, where the men’s team placed second out of eight teams and the women took fifth out of eleven teams.
The men’s team racked up 121 points, but North Carolina A&T remained back-to-back champions with 175.5 points putting them in first. Still, the Huskies managed to claim second, edging out William & Mary in third with 120 points.
The meet was condensed to one day rather than the two scheduled initially due to the weather.
Graduate student Kyle Sarney delivered the Huskies their first gold with a first-place finish in the mile, crossing the finish line at 4:06.92. Sarney slipped past Hofstra freshman Abel Kipkemboi by 1.84 seconds to deliver 10 points for the Huskies.
In the 5,000-meter, graduate student Ryan Slaney and sophomore Nico Boyle both took to the podium, earning silver and bronze, respectively. Slaney crossed the finish line at 14:23.94 and Boyle at 14:24, adding a combined 14 points to the Huskies’ team score.
Slaney and Boyle also performed well in the 3K, with Slaney taking the bronze with a time of 8:10.16 and Boyle following in fourth at 8:11.60. Junior Ryan Sarney was up next for the Huskies, taking fifth at 8:11.99.
Freshman Logan Alfandari added a bronze-medal performance in the field, recording a mark of 17.86 in the weight throw and earning six points for the Huskies.
Northeastern also won gold in the distance medley relay, with the team of sophomore Jack Mattingly, freshman Bryan Schaeffer, freshman Dawson French and Sarney clocking in at 10:07.77. The finish earned another 10 points for the Huskies.
The women’s team saw record-breaking success in the 60-meter hurdle, with sophomore Jaice Dorsey recording a 8.48-second performance and earning a silver medal. She also tied the school record, held by Nikiya Reid since 1999.
Dorsey also took bronze in the pentathlon with 3,579 points.
Junior Savannah Blair added to the milestones, breaking her own school record in the 60-meter dash. Blair’s 7.41-second finish earned her a silver medal and eight points for the Huskies. She added to her collection of hardware with a bronze finish in the 200-meter dash at 23.89.
Another silver was added in the women’s 4×800 relay, courtesy of graduate students Stephanie Kriss and Lauren Trejo alongside sophomore Emily McCann and junior Waverly Hassman. The lineup crossed the finish line at 8:59.28 to add eight points for the Huskies.
Junior Camryn Cole’s 6.04 mark in the long jump handed her second place to add another podium finish for the Huskies. Also in the field, senior Leila Curtis threw 15.02 meters in the shot put to take silver, and junior Katie Rodriguez took third in the pole vault with a mark of 3.95. These finishes accounted for 22 points of the women’s team’s 88-point total.
The CAA Championships marked a positive performance for the Huskies. The men’s team delivered a podium-worthy performance to earn a silver medal, and the women’s team broke numerous records to close out the championships.
